Does your Shopify store need an AI chat agent? A checklist

AI chat agents are easy to add and easy to regret if they don't fit your store. Before you install one, it's worth checking whether the questions your shoppers ask are the kind an agent can answer well. This checklist is how we'd decide, even though we build one.

Signs it will help

Shoppers ask the same questions repeatedly. If sizing, delivery times, compatibility or order status make up most of your messages, an agent can answer them from your existing pages.

Questions arrive when nobody is online. Evenings, weekends and different time zones are where an agent adds the most, because the alternative is a reply hours later.

Your products need explanation before purchase. Many variants, custom or made-to-order items, subscriptions or international shipping all create questions a product page can't fully answer.

Your team spends time on answers that are already written down. If the answer exists in your FAQ or policies and someone still types it out each time, that's time an agent can give back.

Signs it won't help much

You get very few questions. A store with a handful of messages a week doesn't need automation; a fast personal reply is better.

Most questions need judgment about a specific case. Damaged items, disputes and special requests need a person. An agent should hand these off, not answer them.

Your policies aren't written down yet. An agent can only be as good as the content it's trained on. Write your shipping, returns and sizing information first; that helps shoppers whether or not you add an agent.

What to look for if you add one

It answers from your content. The agent should use your products, policies and docs, not general knowledge about how stores usually work.

It can see real order data. Order status is one of the most common questions, and an agent that can't look up the actual order can only paste your shipping policy.

It hands off cleanly. When it can't answer, it should pass the conversation to a person with the full history, so the shopper doesn't start over.

You can try it before you commit. Test it on your own site with your shoppers' real questions before paying for anything.
